As many of South Africans nowadays, the stress levels lately have been quite high - so I was delighted when I received a Daddy Voucher for some pamper time…. (me +1) . Immediately I thought sister time. Now my sister and I have been to Mangawani several times and we are pretty realistic in knowing that it is going to be very hard to beat that experience… but a spa and massage is always lekker regardless of venue.
I googled the Annie’s Health & Spa to find out directions and also for reviews…. I must confess that I was a bit apprehensive when I couldn't find any review and I got that “ this is a scam” feeling. So I said , let’s go with open mind and just enjoy a good old Swedish Massage, to get rid of those knots. Having both had a difficult week, we were looking forward to adult and calm time…. Sjoe, were we wrong.
Picture this: The owner’s children were all over the premises, Cartoon network playing loudly in the background. The daughter was the hostess….would have been cute if we had then been attended to by a professional. We were asked to join the “mani/pedi room” - there laying on the floor is one of the “therapists” giving the owner a pedi. Sis and I looked at each other and thought: ok ??? We literally had to wait twenty minutes while they set up for us. Dirty carpets, children walking in and out, the workers reporting (and not in a nice way) to the owner that some of the clients were saying that it was just too noisy. While having our “pedicures”, other clients joined. There was no sense of calmness or silence with therapists and children talking loudly to clients and each other as if they had were in a party venue. I could see the clients were taken aback. We were not even offered coffee during the two hours. And to my utter shock I see that towels and water were cleaned out just outside the entrance. No lie. I am sure if you go there now you will find some of my nail clippings and dead heel skin on the floor. We were then chaperoned to our massage room. Dirty carpets and oily walls immediately put me off. No hanging facility, meant that our clothes had to be put on the floor. The steamer, which had to be shared between two, had not seen a clean cloth for at least a year. The towels did not smell fresh, but reluctantly I laid down looking forward to a Swedish massage that would relax my aching muscles. The facial was done with old and used creams, and I dread to think whether the sponges were even clean. Still sis and I remained calm and prepared for our massage.
This was the worst experience of the whole day… The Swedish massage was actually was an oil rubbing session interrupted by a few karate chops on your back… As the oil (which smelt more like Canola oil), got pasted on our backs I get asked: Is the pressure ok?… I actually started to laugh. In the midst of this basting session, someone decided that it was shabeen time and put some African beat music at full blast. It wakens every pore that might have beenhave relaxed from the oiling session.
Needless to say that we got dressed at record speed and left with a polite thank you. On my way out, my inner soul was screaming to the next client : RUN.

To Annie at Annie’s Health & Spa, when people think of Health & Spa, they think of tranquillity and relaxation. I understand that you have little family time,
it is not relaxing to have TV noises in the back ground and the children walking around. Your carpets and tools need to be cleaned out and your staff need to learn the art of silence and relaxation. If you want to listen to music, try a relaxing vibe. Add some ambiance to your rooms. You have the potential, you need to fine tune it and make it more of a spa. Take yourself to Mangawani for the day and learn how it feels to feel pampered and relaxed.
