6 months for passport renewal
After spending more than 3 hours at the Centurion Home Affairs site to apply for a passport renewal on 12 December 2013 (staff not to eager to assist), I have still have not received it yet (2 June 2014). The "Home Affairs: Check Status" app indicates that the application was received and is still in process - this after close to 6 months.
Pathetic service!!!!!

PATHETIC SERVICE AND ADVICE
I was tossed from one lady to another and all three had differing answers. It took us two hours to find out a letter that IS on the SYSTEM is still in Pretoria and they cant do anything about it. ive been to Pretoria adn they have sent me back to Centurion for the manger to call them to reissue the lost letter!!! Bollocks service

Upon collection of my temporary passport that very next Wednesday, I found the same level of service. When something went slow, it was due to a difficult customer who did not bring the correct documents. I was still out in under an hour.

Quick and Painless
I recently had to apply for a passport and temporary passport. Went in on a very busy Saterday morning. There was more than enough seating so when I had to stand in a queue it was not for very long. The staff were efficient, patient and friendly. I was in and out within an hour.

I recently had to replace my ID book due to theft. What a pleasant surprise! Super efficient staff, excellent and friendly service, and a great experience. My new ID arrived in short order, and it took all of 5 minutes to collect!

Just give me my Passport
Got there to remember I don't have photos. The guy in the taxi outside didnt do to bad a job. Inside is a quick guessing game, and no real order to be helped in. But the people kind of come together in this, lets just do what we need to do kinda vibe so we can all get back to our lives kinda way. One of the four counters where operating, with the other vacant and two other just sitting there looking busy. When it got closer to closing time, the service level magically improved. Its disappointing seeing it takes them 3 min to do your docs to send you to the pay station...when you have to sit for 40 min to be helped...when there are only 3 client in front of you. Service at payment was quick - everyone like receiving money. No greeting tho, just a shout for R400. The guy at fingerprints...needed to be found. All and all, the job is done in about an hour. Not to bad, but there really is much to be desired.

Follow up review
So I said I'd do a follow up review after collecting my docs... So here goes... Off I went this morning, and it was super quick.. So convenient I found parking easily right outside the entrance and went on in. There were short queues, not because it was quiet just because the staff were motoring through collections. I was stoked, another great government service experience here we go.... THEN I got to the front, all was speedy but oh my word the one lady in particular was beyond rude and controlling... Wow, I was taken a back and it left a bitter taste in my mouth when leaving... I really think it is such a pity how one rotten apple can spoil a batch... After some thought and processing the experience, I still rate this home affairs highly. Maybe prepare yourself for some hard core impacts, but it is still efficient and convenient.... Some customer service training and ur a for away home affairs - good job!!!!

Agree with Sian. If you look beyond the look and feel of the building and focus on the service, things have improved remarkably. It was easier find the content on Yowzit than the Government website. But the staff were highly efficient. Lost ID document was my problem.

Home Affairs and I'm impressed :)
Being newly married, I needed to change my passport and ID to my married name, so off I went to the home affairs in centurion. Needless to say after numerous reports and bad publicity of government departments, I was dreading this adventure. To my surprise, it was an efficient service, with helpful staff and orderly processes. Yes, some revamp wouldn't hurt, but it was far from the dreaded experience I was expecting. Also, to my surprise both my ID and passport have arrived early. I will fetch them this week, so watch this space for an update on how that went. Only critique is to update the website and give new details of change of address - for those who don't know, it is now across from the Centurion Gautrain station. Convenient for those wanting decent service - hop on the train and walk across the road... It's worth it!
