After an absence of some 30 plus years ... yes, just makes this 'old biscuit' feel older ! (Last experienced in my 20's can you believe it !), we returned ! Although it was quite newish and vogue in the eighties ('shu wa' . good red vino, candlelight and best leather jacket ?), costly commitments like busy jobs and (expensive) human development assignments (children), kept us away until mid December 2016. Invited as part of a gathering of family and friends in lieu of flambouyant at home festive celebrations ... we were curious to see how Casa had evolved over the years. Comprising a core of an old fashioned farmhouse, with wide cool African verandahs, larger parties were seated in inside rooms, and smaller parties like ours at round tables on the verandah. The magnificent vista of the (old) driving range - now a HUGE lawn, elevated above the surrounds was magnificent. Service from the waiters was absolutely top drawer - attentive, professional, quick, accurate - really good throughout the lunch. The maitre d / chef introduced and explained the (standard Christmas / Sunday) menu items and specials and the inevitable questions about this and that, and then we got around to choosing ... nice to have a varied but limited choice of items for the meal courses. I chose lamb shank as a main, and tiramisu for dessert - a starter and coffee topped and tailed. All courses were immaculately dressed and served, and of good quality throughout. However, whilst the shank was good, it lacked a little of something ... that essential signature touch / taste only a deft chef can deliver .... so disappointingly bland with Casa's reputation and my own expectation ? Nonetheless, all enjoyed a super special occasion, and excellent dining experience - Thanks to all !

Casalinga - Lacking that critical touch of panache ?

I'd heard so much about Casalinga and we went as a special day out. It wasn't awful, the food did taste good but it was nowhere near what it had been built up to. In all honesty, the prices were really steep and what we ate we could have ordered at any Italian restaurant for 3/4 to 1/2 the price and it would have tasted the same. The service was excellent but we did feel a little rushed - our food arrived literally 5 minutes after ordering.
Gareth had the lamb shank (R185) which came with a small scoop of savoury rice, a broccoli floret or two and a spinach egg. I had the beef ravioli and while it was delicious, I am certain I could order it anywhere (R90). The lamb could have been presented so much better too.
Aside from this, it is a beautiful venue and the lawns are lovely. So, overall it was just ok.

One of our friends celebrated her 70th birthday with a fabulous luncheon here today. With the weather being so super we got to sit under the trees in the garden. After a crumbed calamari starter for my hubby and fried halloumi for me, our main course was sole with a spinach pie, roast potatoes and stir fried peppers. Absolutely delicious!! Tiramisu and chocolate mousse for sweets - we literally rolled out of there three hours later!! Got to see a wedding at the Casalinga chapel - the bride looked stunning!!

I had heard so much about Casalinga and was looking forward to something really nice, the food was ok - but not very special, and the service was so poor, perhaps it was because we had bought a Groupon special that we were given such poor service, I didn't enjoy the evening at all. I think restaurants shouldn't offer people specials and then give them poor service and make them feel like lesser customers for it. Won't choose to go back.
