I thought that my least favourite hardware store had turned over a new leaf with their revamp. To some extent, there has been improvement, the most significant of which is the extra entrance / exit on the West side, for 'Tradesmen' - which has resulted in swifter 'in and out' as essentially the 'regular crowd' of weekend warriors is fixated on using the old exit (Thankful for small mercies !) . They have also tried to improve logistics with a big board announcing 'on line' ordering - although I have not tried it, I remain VERY skeptical with a wealth of frustrating logistical experiences whilst at the store in person ?!? Anyhow - to the latest encounter ..... having been unsuccessful at obtaining a piece of 4mm household glass at both Cashbuild (usually the 'cutter' here is very obliging), and at Wettevreden Glass ('sorry dude, I will be closed tomorrow, and I'm running on minimal stock - don't have any 4mm glass), I really expected that the new 'Glass' counter at BW would deliver. After being rudely ambushed in the queue by some boorish dont give a damn dude, the counterhand said he had no 4mm glass of that size ! (Don't you just DO GLASS ?). I told the counterhand that I was annoyed (He got the drift !) Never ceases to amaze me with all the technology available for inventory management, that stores run out of stuff ..... for goodness sake ! Anyhow, I have temporarily given up trying to get my little piece of glass, and will try again when I have the strength to do so, or the "SILLY SEASON" is truly over - Bah - Humbug !?

My least favourite hardware and associated store is going through a major refit, which has been the case for some months now. Rearranging the complete layout of the store (I agree that it was never very good anyway - hopefully this will be an improvement ?) In the interim, during the upgrade, it is 'business as usual' , but the dust, disruption and disarray has kept a lot of shoppers away (This is a good thing !). BW seems to be trapped between the worlds of 'retailing' and 'building supply store' and its an uncomfortable marriage making for neither fish nor fowl. OK, some things they have got right (like the fastenings and nuts and bolts section), but others .... mmm. Layout is a major issue for me, as I really don't want to browse at all. I know what I want, and I need to locate the item/s as quickly as possible, pay and go, and with changing layouts between stores, this becomes a frustration (model layout is at Cashbuild, dudes, in case you don't know, where with some minor exceptions, the same items are in the same relative layout / space at EVERY OUTLET !)

The stereotype is that hardware stores (or warehouses) are for me but I have to say that I thoroughly enjoy a trip to builder's. I have often popped in to get supplies for my craft group as they have the best selection. I've bough cork tiles, cut-to-size boards, nails, sand paper, tools and light fittings here among other things. It's a massive store so they have almost anything you can think of. They also sell large appliances like washing machines which my hubby and I looked at when we got married but we found that Makro was cheaper for that sort of thing.

This builders warehouse is MASSIVE. I have never seen such a massive hardware store and have no doubts that this is like Disney land to DIY guys. Unfortunately, the time that I went was at the beginning of the month, and a Saturday morning too. After wondering the door aisles for a while, I struggled to get the attention of one of the floor guys to come and help me. I waited in line for a while, then started following another couple so I could steal their person when they finished...in the end, I did find someone to help. I deducted points for professionalism because he bugged me about going to dinner with him and my number, which is awkward.
Other than that, the variety at the store is amazing. A one-stop shop for everything DIY and the prices are great! Just don't go on a Saturday morning ;)

I visit here at least once a month - pool chemicals, globes, tools, electrical components, bathroom accessories - the house always needs something and this big open warehouse has it all. Had to get a new stepladder a short while ago - good excuse to visit Builders Warehouse!!

My husband could be left at Builders Warehouse and would be as happy as Larry!! He wouldnt even complain if I took ages shopping elsewhere (as long as I left him there). For all our pool, garden, building, plumbing etc requirements, this is a one stop shop and you can get everything you need!

I recently needed two very simple items (2 x 6m x 76mm SA Pine pieces), as this size of timber is not stocked by my first choice supplier, Cashbuild. After parking, shlepping (and waiting) at the trade counter for 15 minutes, checking out and paying, driving around to despatch, waiting for a picker to take my 'slippie', and then waiting an incredible 30 minutes plus to get the items, I finally received my 2 sticks, and then checked out - whew ! Over an hour to buy 2 little sticks ? I think I have said all I think about this place, but I urge shoppers to avoid unless they have no choice. The yard logistics are just plain hopeless. I notice that BW have now started supplying 'loose' material (not before time). They must have poached the 'bobcat' driver from Rocha's in Ellis Park (the best material logisticians on the planet !) - he was zipping around tidying the piles of material with amazing alacrity (maybe even a bit dangerously given all the vehicles and people moving about). If you have lots of patience and time to waste, buy something at Builders Warehouse Constantia !

Third strike and they are out .....Having previously encountered the issue where a special item and offer is advertised (and merchandised), but at the till, rung up at 'normal' / non special price. Case in point again last week where popped in to buy chlorine, saw a special for the 11kg tub of HTH (wiff water clarifier nogal !), at R 268. However, it was rung up at the till at R 290. Before transacting, was alerted by a fellow shopper (who had been caught by the same thing, and was VERY annoyed to say the least!), the supervisor was called, the transaction adjusted...blah blah blah. I have previously encountered this situation at the same store, on 2 previous occasions, so this time have to conclude that the basic process of handling specials is flawed, responsible personnel are just plain slack, or there is some skulduggery going on, or a combination thereof. To add insult to injury, they were also out of stock of my size of safety shoe. I just cannot understand in this day of slick IT and lots of practice, WHY stores like this run out of stock - ?!? Same conclusion/s as above. If it were not for convenience, I would avoid this store, and if they stock something I need, it is about my (distant) 4th choice. ?

I often shopped here in the past, but lately this store seems to be dropping in customer service.Hard to find someone around to help you who is knowelgeable about the items or who knows the layout of the store properly, without having to go isle by isle...going from pillar to post as they say. The prices as well is increasing. If there ia a sale or clearance items, you can get a good price, else best to shop somewhere else, where things are cheaper.Good to have everything under one roof, but if service delivery fails, its not worth it.

Enjoyed a better experience at this Builder's recently, first at the curtain / rod section, where the assistant was knowledgeable and helpful. Whilst I found the curtain rod / s I needed, they did not have the stock I needed BUT referred me to B/W North Riding to a specific person, with whom set aside what I needed. I had a similar experience from the Plumbing / Accessories counter in terms of specific robe hooks needed, so far better than before this B/W - getting better !!!!
