Big Bay (Bloubergstrand) in Cape Town
Big Bay has a pleasant little beach with great views of Table Mountain and especially of Robben Island. The beach has two rocky points that extend out into the sea creating a small bay in which surfing, windsurfing and swimming are popular. The beach itself has nice white sand with a few pebbles scattered around.

Big Bay Beach is a beautiful beach to go walking on but .... you have got to be careful of the blue bottles!! We were down there two weeks ago and within a couple of minutes had squashed at least six of the little critters!! There were kiddies innocently playing on the beach and we warned a couple from Canada that, if one of their little ones got stung, to run up and get some of the vygie juice and rub it on the area concerned. They had never seen blue bottles before and didn't know what vygies were!! The view of Table Mountain from Big Bay Beach is magnificent and there is a lovely little range of shops with beach clothing right there.

On our family trip to Cape Town over Christmas, and on most of our trips to CT, we always go to Big Bay to take nice long walks on the beach and then go for breakfast afterwards. The water is freezing cold so despite wearing my costume I never found occasion to use it, but the sand is white and fine, there are people around walking their dogs and jogging, the beach is well looked after and there is plenty of parking. It's one of my favourite parts of the holiday and I would definitely encourage people travelling to Cape Town to take a walk along this beach.

If you are prepared to brave the cold waters of Bloubergstrand, this is the place to do it. A short distance from the beach you will see a rocky island in front of you. At low tide the waters part here and you can walk/ paddle or swim to this island and pick mussels off the rocks. Just make sure you get back before the tide comes in!! The beach is always clean and we were aware of the police patrolling the beach over the December period - whether it be to offer assistance or to ensure that people behave - it was still nice to see them there because this beach really does get packed!! If you don't want to walk out to the island, take a strong along the perfect white sands and just after the island there is the deep blue sea. You might even be lucky enough to see the seals basking in the sun on the rocks.

If you are driving up the West Coast I suggest you stop and take a photo!!! You get a great view of Table Mountain and of Robben Island, a postcard photo!! The beach is clean and well kept, great for surfing if you can brave the cold waters. If not walk along the pure white sand and take photo's of the scenery, it is totally worth it and perfectly safe.

Slightly warmer than Blouberg beach, whats even better and took my breath away when i first came here was the spectacular view of robben island!! looks like one could take a swim there, I wouldnt try though, besides it being a very long stretch, the tide gets quite rough towards sunset!
